The Legend continues! “Prawat” clinches Double Gold at ASEAN Para Games, reclaiming the speed throne in Style
It is undeniable that 44-year-old Prawat Wahoram is one of Thailand’s greatest wheelchair racing athletes of all time. As the nation’s first-ever Paralympic gold medalist, he has built a legacy of sustained excellence, securing a total of 7 gold medals across 7 consecutive Paralympic appearances.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! While his path to an 8th Paralympic Games was interrupted by a one-year suspension, the fighting heart of the “Unsmiling Tiger” never stopped beating for the track. After serving his suspension, he chose to challenge himself once more at the ASEAN Para Games, entering two events in the T54 class: the 1,500m and 5,000m. The entire stadium watched with bated breath, awaiting the return of the legend.
Prawat delivered a spectacular comeback, clinching gold in both events and setting new records in the process. He clocked 2:49.11 minutes in the 1,500m and 9:41.54 minutes in the 5,000m. His return to the track was characterized by his signature quiet demeanor—displaying only a quiet satisfaction with his performance and times, particularly relishing the chance to race in front of home fans in a familiar stadium.
Though some pre-race jitters were natural given the atmosphere, his relentless training during his time away was the key factor that ensured everything went according to plan. A year away from the track did not extinguish his fire; on the contrary, missing the thrill of competition drove him to train harder. Physically and mentally prepared through a systematic approach, his sights are now firmly set on returning to the Paralympic stage in the United States.
From the 16-year-old boy who began his life in wheelchair racing, today his name is recognized not just as a champion, but as a paragon of determination for the next generation. His journey proves that obstacles are not the end, but merely tests of the heart. Dedication and attention to detail are the elements that brought him here. This successful comeback was born not only of a fighter’s spirit but is the result of systematic work—from intense training and sports science to proper recovery and meticulous race execution.
Behind this success, the Sports Authority of Thailand has been a continuous driving force, providing resource support, preparation planning, physical and mental care, and establishing a comprehensive athlete development system. This allows athletes to focus entirely on reaching their maximum potential and returning to the competitive arena stronger than ever.
